Fresh Juice Recipe: Beet, Carrot, Apple and Ginger

In an effort to cleanse my body of toxins (also called “yuckies” by my 3.5 year old daughter), I have been  on a detox journey using a menu plan written by Gwyneth Paltrow with her doctor, Dr. Alejandro Junger author of the book “Clean”. I know a lot of people hate Gwyneth Paltrow, but I absolute love her site Goop as it has good tips for health.

At any rate, my husband and I bought a juicer two years ago and we were using it almost every day. Then for some reason, we just stopped. Detoxing has given me the opportunity to bring it out again and include fresh juice into my diet. Here is a tip: if you have a juicer, keep it out on the counter or you will never use it. I know that it’s big, but you know the saying, “out of sight, out of mind,” right? It’s true. So keep it out and then you can incorporate that into your daily menus.

On to the Beet, Carrot, Apple Ginger Juice. It’s a beautiful color, isn’t it? Before I decided to make this juice I looked up the benefits of beets in your diet. Beets have been shown to low blood pressure (not for people with hypertension) and are a powerful blood and system cleanser.   It is also believed that beets can increase stamina and provide numerous heart-healthy benefits.  It is being called a super juice and while I know that there is no one cure for all that ails, I am willing to add more healthy things into my diet.

The recipe follows but I want to share my thoughts on this juice. It actually tastes good despite the fact that I really don’t like beets. I did notice… Continue reading

Product/Book Review: First Place 4 Health

514spbbsmwl_sl160_This review is long overdue as I won this book from Books-a-Latte back in October. I am sharing it today because I entered another contest and felt really badly that I had not kept my end of the bargain, and also because with New Year’s Resolutions looming in the back of every mind, many of us will vow to lose weight this year. I, for one make, this vow every year and every year I fail because I don’t do enough to change the big picture. This year, things will be different.

Carole Lewis, author of First Place 4 Health, has written a spiritual guide for losing weight. The theory behind this book is steeped in Christianity and a strong belief in God. Lewis believes that the key to losing weight is a strong relationship with God.

If you have been reading my blog for a while, you may know that I am Agnostic. If not, you do now. When I first opened this book I was a little turned off by the authors dependency on religion to guide health, but the truth is that I am not who she was writing for in the first place. However, I continued to read because I was interested in her approach.

Lewis specifies that weight loss cannot exist on its own. It is part of a whole that one must break into four groups: spiritual, emotional, physical, and mental. While for Lewis spirituality is  a concrete belief in God (Christianity), for me it is about harmony and a understanding that everything is connected. If you are like me then you will find that regardless of your religious beliefs, Lewis’ approach is a holistic one and one that could work.

Monthly Purpose

When I was pregnant with SWHS, my husband and I looked into saving cord blood cells mainly because a family member was suffering with a life-threatening illness and these stem sells may have helped. Unfortunately, she came a month early and threw all of our plans off kilter. But I started thinking about stem cells again after reading an article about some advances in stem cell research.

On July 30, 2008, Harvard and Columbia University researchers reached a milestone when they generated embryonic-like stem cells from the skin samples of an elderly ALS patient. The researchers were then able to coax these cells into healthy nerve cells that could potentially help a sick person. With science making such gains, it may be only a matter of time before stem cells research develops life saving techniques.

In fact, I recently came across some information that may serve as an alternative to stem cell collection.

A woman’s menstrual cycle contains stem cells that may help prevent future illnesses such as Alzheimers, Parkinson, and more. In November 2007, scientist discovered that the cells collected from a woman’s menstrual sycle replicate 70 times faster than those collected from an umbilical cord. These cells can then be produced into 9 different cells such as the heart, liver, and lungs. And, it only takes 5ml of menstrual blood.

C’elle provides women with a chance to collect their own stem cells during their menstrual period and safely transport them to the C’elle lab for Cryo-preservation. What I really like about C’elle is that they make no guarantees and are very upfront about the fact that it may be years before any one knows how the cells work. And while there are no concrete answers as to how stem cells may prevent or cure disease, it is definitely… Continue reading
