Work-at-home Mom and Living: is it possible?

This is supposed to be my year of ACTION. A new year in which I accomplish my goals. I just have not been able to set them yet.

I am having such a hard time figuring out what to do with this blog. I named it “Mom on the Rise” because of the Maya Angelou poem “Still I Rise.” My mom thought that  having a child (even after married and in my late 20s) was the end of my life. But I always felt that it was the beginning of a new one. I am a Mom, and still I rise. I completed my Master’s Degree and started a business.

But then I got tired.

I thought about letting it go and then about writing in more of a focused niche. And yet, neither has has sat well with me. I love this blog. The design. Some of the posts that I have written in the past. I’m not sure what the heck is keeping me from writing. Maybe it’s because I have WAY too many blogs. Or maybe it’s the web designing, consulting and running We of Hue….

Obviously, I tend to spread myself too thin. I have a problem saying “no” to people and focusing on what I want to do. In some ways, I think that I prevent myself from focusing because I don’t want to commit 100% and then fail. Or maybe it’s because I keep trying to live out the definition of “mom blogger” as set by others. Truthfully, I have been making decisions based on what I SHOULD be doing (as dictated by others) as opposed to what I want to do for a long time. It’s the result of coming from a very overbearing mom who really did not… Continue reading

It’s All About Me

Ultimate Blog Party 2010

Well I’m a little late to the party which is so unlike me. I can’t stand tardiness. But alas, it’s hard to be on time when you found out about the party less than 10 minutes ago. Nonetheless, better late than never,

My name is Kristina Brooke. It’s very nice to meet you. Mom on the Rise came to me one night when I realized that my desire to be “more” suddenly took over me after becoming a mom. Having a child made me realize that the life of “almost doing” was not longer good enough. So, I decided that teaching other kids was just not enough for me and I needed more. I am learning to find the time to get it all done and stay sane.

My husband and my daughter make me smile non-stop. They remind me that good exist in the world and that I am special. My hubby and I have been together for 13 years and married 7 years this August.

I have a lot of hobbies- many of which are rather nerdy. I like web design and choose to code using Notepad rather than a WYSIWYG editor. I enjoy reading about gadgets and watching true crime TV. I enjoy learning even when what I have learned is rather trivial. I’m addicted to all things Anne Rice and a good book can actually shut me up- which says a lot. (A word about Anne Rice: all of you Twilight fans- you have been completely duped by this inadequately written series. Anne Rice is the champion when it comes to Vampire tales). I am a knitter, crocheter, and writer (of adult fiction too).

My family has been through a lot of heart ache over the last year with the loss of… Continue reading

30 Things About Me that Start With the Letter “K”

I was bored and decided to make up this meme. I wanted to see how many things I could reveal about myself starting each sentence with the first letter of my name. I think it is fun, so if you want to give it a try, please do so and add your name to my Mr. Linky Box. Please do not add your name if you did not complete the meme. Oh, and be sure to change the title of you post to 30 Things About Me that Start with the Letter “______”  My goal is to do a list every week until I spell out my whole first name.

OK, here I go:

1. Kristina with a “K” no “h” and ending in “a”.
2. Kristina is actually not my first name. My real first name starts with a “K” too. I have not been called my real first name since I was 3 and in fact, I have legally changed my name to Kristina.
3. Kitchens that are beautiful and functional fascinate me.
4. Kindness is my downfall and people often take advantage of me because I am too kind.
5. Kittens make me sneeze. Cats too.
6. Kindergarten is one of my favorite memories of my childhood. I went to a place that had a playground on the roof. It was fenced in really well. I don’t think anyone every got hurt.
7. Krazy Kristina was one of my nicknames in college.
8. KKK are my initials if you take out 3 of my names and include my maiden name.
9. Kid you not, I have 8 names if you include my maiden name.
