27: The Day it Happened (Part 4)
“Teri, you sound like my mother. I am NOT in love with Dettie. Besides, even if I were, she is married. And, in two months I will be too.”
It was the first time that he had said that out loud, and his faced showed just how awkward he felt about it. He never pictured himself married. In fact, the only woman he pictured in his life for a long time was Bernadette.
“So what she’s married. Love does not understand that. Love wants what it wants. And you want her. When you face the truth, I will talk to Steve.” Teri was sure that she would never have to live up to her statement.
The day seemed to inch by slowly and Matt was getting restless. Every time he was scheduled to see Dettie the days flew by, but today, well today was different. It was going in slow motion. He tried to make the best of the time by planning the marketing events for the next few weeks but his heart wasn’t in it. All he could think about was having dinner with his friend.
He kept hearing Teri’s words, “…you’re obviously in love with her,” in his head. He knew that he had strong feelings for her, but the idea of being in love with Bernadette was something he avoided thinking about. After all, she had been in a relationship since they met five years ago and there was no denying that she and Ralph were madly in love. His greatest joy and his most devastating moment was walking her down the aisle to give her to another man, and yet, deep in his heart he knew that it was the only way that they could ever be together. Friendship was strong, and theirs was the strongest he had ever known.
