“You’re so silly. I just wanted to remind you that the meeting was changed to Monday. So, see you there at 5:00 tonight, Okay?”
“Okie-Dokie. Tonight at 5:00 it is. I’ll bring the candy.” They both laughed and hung up. He couldn’t wait.
Matt reached his office shortly after hanging up with Mel. From the look on his Teri’s, his administrative assistant, weary face, he knew that the day was going to be rather boring. He was used to it by now and in a way he liked it. He moved Upstate after realizing that he would like a slower, smaller atmosphere in his “old age.” He wanted to become a General Manager for the his company’s college food service division, but he knew that he would have to be at a smaller facility. The larger colleges downstate where he worked before were just too high pressure, and besides, his mother was Upstate.
He checked the stack of messages that Teri placed on his desk as always, and frowned slightly when none of them turned out to be from Bernadette. He looked forward to her “bitches-to-start-the-week” phone calls on Monday, and it was the first time in a while that she hadn’t called. His heart sank as he starred out the window. He picked up the receiver to call his mother, but dialed Bernadette’s number instead.
“Hello Darling,” she sung into the phone.
“Hello Dettie,” he answered back. “Why didn’t you call me this morning? I was so looking forward to your latest gripe list.”
“Sorry hon. I had a meeting at eight and I was going to call you after it ended.”
“Oh, so you’re busy?”
“No. The damned bastard never showed up. It’s eight-fifteen and the bastard isn’t here. So, I am all yours.”
Bless you, this is great.
